Strategically situated where the Nile Valley transforms itself into the Nile Delta, Cairo has always attracted the interest of people who sought a better life and employment opportunities. And thus, as a result of migration and declining death rate, the rapidly rising population caused the city limits to expand deeper and deeper into the fertile land along the Nile river. To prevent the destruction of precious agricultural land and to accommodate the steadily rising population, almost doubling in just thirty years, in the 1970s it was decided to built new satellite cities in the desert areas. A general endeavor to redirect urban growth toward the desert affected not only Cairo, but other cities in the Greater Cairo Metro Area as well. And therefore people are often surprised to find the Great Pyramids now situated virtually at the edge of a vast city of Giza.
With its almost 8 million inhabitants in the administrative area and another 10 million people in the metro area, Greater Cairo is the biggest agglomeration in Africa.
