Cairo a free photo book

The aim of this photo book is to bring the reality of everyday life in one of the most fascinating cities in the world closer to anyone who would like to know more about Cairo and its inhabitants.
Strategically situated where the Nile Valley transforms itself into the Nile Delta, Cairo has always attracted the interest of people who sought a better life and employment opportunities. And thus, as a result of migration and declining death rate, the rapidly rising population caused the city limits to expand deeper and deeper into the fertile land along the Nile river. To prevent the destruction of precious agricultural land and to accommodate the steadily rising population, almost doubling in just thirty years, in the 1970s it was decided to built new satellite cities in the desert areas. A general endeavor to redirect urban growth toward the desert affected not only Cairo, but other cities in the Greater Cairo Metro Area as well. And therefore people are often surprised to find the Great Pyramids now situated virtually at the edge of a vast city of Giza.
With its almost 8 million inhabitants in the administrative area and another 10 million people in the metro area, Greater Cairo is the biggest agglomeration in Africa.

The cheapest way to Machu Picchu

If you aren´t willing to pay 50 USD (145 Soles) for a 2 hours long
train journey from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu)
or 70 USD directly from Cusco/Poroy, here is what you have to do:

1. In Cusco take a taxi (3-4 Soles) to Santiago bus terminal. This isn´t
the main bus terminal!

2. At the Santiago bus terminal, there is a TURISMO AMPAY counter
opposite of the entrance.  Buy a morning ticket to Santa Maria (20 Soles).
The sooner you will arrive in Santa Maria the better for you. The journey
takes about 5-6 hours.

3. After arriving in Santa Maria, don´t waste time and immediately search for
a taxi or collectivo to HIDROELÉCTRICA (10-15 Soles). There will be many
drivers waiting for you, but you should avoid empty cars, coz you would
have to wait for more passengers or simply pay for the empty places.
The ride to Hidroeléctrica via Santa Teresa takes about 2 hours.

4. On the way to Hidroelectrica, there is a small booth where you have to
sign in. The final stage of your journey is an easy 2-3 hours walk from a little
train station near the hydroelectric plant to Aguas Calientes. All you will
have to do is to follow the train tracks, except a small short cut which is
signed “ruta de salida”. There are two tunnels on the way but you don´t
have to go through, coz there is an exit to a road leading to Aguas Calientes,
just before the first tunnel entrance.

5. On the way back, simply do the same in reverse. There are at least
two daily buses back to Cusco or you can take a collectivo. For up-to-date
info, ask at the Turismo Ampay counter.
